At 4:30 AM, your private guide will pick you up at your hotel in Aswan and take you on a three-hour drive south, in a comfortable, air-conditioned car, to Abu Simbel for a private tour. The great pharaoh Ramses II had these two rock-cut temples made for him and his wife Nefertari in the 13th century BC. It is a great example of Egyptian New Kingdom architecture, so when the Aswan High Dam was first built and flooded its original site, the Egyptian government and UNESCO worked together to keep both temples from getting flooded. Your guide will take you to the Great Temple, also called the Temple of the Sun, which was built in honour of Ramses II and is dedicated to him and four other gods. Your guide will also take you to the smaller Temple of Hathor, which is dedicated to Ramses II's wife Nefertari. He is a trained Egyptologist and can tell you about the details of statues and rock carvings, as well as how to keep temples from flooding. You will leave the temples after about two hours and get back to Aswan at 12:30.
