Kalabsha Temple and Nubian Museum Tour

With the help of your private guide, spend the day exploring two of Nubia's most important complexes. You go to the Kalabsha Temple, which is the biggest temple in the area that stands on its own, and the Nubian Museum, which is one of the most important museums with artefacts from tombs and temples. The area is covered by the High Dam. First, take a motorboat along the Nile to the ancient Temple of Kalabsha, which was built on the shores of Lake Nasser. The temple was built by the Roman Emperor Octavius Augustus in 30 B.C. Mandulis, or Mirol, is the sun god of lower Nubia. Find the largest free-standing temple in Egyptian Nubia and look at the beautiful carving of Horus emerging from a reed on the inner curtain wall. Follow your guide as he or she shows you the amazing sculptures and features of the temple and explains why it is thought to be one of the most complete in the area. Next, go to the International Nubia Museum. It was built as part of a project by UNESCO to save artefacts from the area's history. The museum is a place to show off things that were taken from tombs, temples, and settlements, which Egyptologists and archaeologists are afraid of. The High Dam's high water level will flood what is left of Egypt's Nubia. The Nuba Museum is a winner of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. It opened in 1997.
